The Source is in the Roots
The global secular holiday that is known as Earth Day takes place on April 24, 2010. I attended my first Earth Day event in 1970, the second national earth day in the United States. I was 16 years old. That Earth Day was a seminal event in my life. On that day I made a paradigm shift: Nature, the earth is not separate from me. The Earth is our Mother. What we do to Her, we do to ourselves. We must take care of Her and in turn, She takes care of us. It is that simple.
Our bodies are not separate from the earth. Our bodies contain all the elements of Nature: earth, water, air, fire and ether. The Earth is a living, breathing, growing being just like us. If we throw candy wrappers, chemical waste, beer cans, bags of trash, old cars, sofas and electrical rubbish in Her streams, ravines, oceans and on Her mountains then we are trashing ourselves. She cannot recycle these items into her body. These items are toxic to Her.
To experience that we are not separate from the earth requires that each of us learn how to cherish ourselves and fully inhabit our bodies. We can begin this journey of self appreciation, respect and love by turning within to nurture the Source of All-that Is, that eternal radiance, like the sun, deep inside of our bellies. This phenomenal fire fuels all physical, emotional, mental and spiritual functions of our Being. Each time we consciously breathe into and inspire from this core, this womb of Light in our bellies, the mental chatter ceases, our heart opens and our bodies relax. We return to the Source residing in the roots of our body- that place from which our true power flows.
In this moment, place your hands lightly on your belly. Relax your shoulders. Breathe naturally. Envision a ball of golden light residing between your navel and pubic bone. Now inhale from this light. Retain the breath. Exhale down your spine and into this illuminated core. Retain the breath. And begin the cycle again. Allow this light to grow with each inhale and spread throughout your belly and your entire body. This is your internal sunshine-the Source in the roots of your Being.
The past five thousand years humanity has valued the expression of power separate from this Source. We have been operating from an objectification of the Earth and Her creatures. She has gracefully and gratefully accepted the ignorance of Her children. She has shape shifted Herself many times since Her inception. However, Her current transfiguration is happening congruently with humanity’s shift in consciousness. Each of us are awakening to discover that the old stories from which we create the drama of our lives, those founded in fear and pain are no longer working for us. If we engage this pain as a summons to discover how to cherish ourselves, anchored in this inner alchemical cauldron, then we allow the Source inside to lead our lives. We align our individual will with divine will. We begin to live our lives in dynamic ease.
We might have accelerated Her natural transformation, yet according to ancient indigenous prophecies and astrological alignments, all is in divine and perfect order. Just as we are reprioritizing our lives, so too is Mama Gaia. She is no longer willing to take our abuse, and is turning inward, evolving to become a more conscious body of light. Through Mama Gaia’s tsunamis and earthquakes She rises up with a fiercely compassionate voice: “Wake up! No more abuse in any form! Look at what you are doing to me, your home, your bodies, your lives and each other.”
The outcome of these earth changes that reflects our own conscious ascension journey lies within each of us. This Source inside of our bellies mirrors the fiery core of Mama Gaia. As a Feminine Being, she is all about creation and transformation. We are, because of this Source inside, the creators of our lives. We have all the resources we need, inside of us, to consciously create a life streaming with the boundless bliss that infuses all matter. Each of us has the capacity to choose how we will relate to whatever is presented in our lives. How we use and respond to the pain and the joy that arises in our daily lives is the key to creating a life filled with love, harmony and beauty.
At one point in my life I took up the Zen Koan: “Nothing Evil! Nothing Good! My Original Face now!” Koans are cosmic riddles that activate our inner knowing. The answer to this Koan arose in the aftermath of a most dramatic circumstance in my life.
I had just regained consciousness from a successful battle with a stranger who woke me up from a deep sleep in my Chicago flat and wanted to rape me. My head felt as if it was floating somewhere above my body. After summoning the police I went straight into the bathroom to look in the mirror.
My reflection revealed a big black and blue bleeding blob attached to my neck. In the middle of this blob were two black dots, my eyes. I peered into the blackness. I felt like Alice falling down the rabbit hole. In my body I felt energy descending down into my body from my head. On my descent I felt terror, rage, shame and grief. I bypassed these feelings as I wanted to see, feel and experience what was at the root of this darkness.
I continued my free fall and fell into an oceanic space of stillness. My descending energy arrived in my belly. Then I saw it: a golden orb of light. The source of the darkness is light. Simultaneously a heat rushed up from my genitals. My body was aflame with Joy.
I spoke out loud: “It’s my Original Face! I vow to remain connected to You for you are the Source of all that Is inside of me. You will lead me from darkness to embody the Light of immortality. You will transmute my lifetimes of abuse into Love!”
This Source is an alchemical cauldron. I find it amusing and astounding that its location is also where the body processes its wastes. When we consciously invite what we feel is mentally, physically, emotionally and spiritually toxic into this fiery core, it is transmuted into the Light of Awareness.
The Zen Koan stated: Nothing Evil! Nothing Good! What this means is that duality is an illusion. I experienced my perpetrator as simply a catalyst for my soul’s awakening. There is no this or that; only IS; present moment. Our Original Face contains it All. That one experience allowed me to discover that evil as an energetic force exists within me. I am not separate from the perpetrator. The energetic that separates me from my Original Face resides within me. The difference between my perpetrator and me lies in how each of us chooses to use our pain. He wanted to harm another and continue to perpetrate his victimization story upon others. I used my pain as fertilizer to nurture Self realization.
We are all catalysts of awakening for each other. When we experience a catalyst in our lives-a relationship break up, an addiction that we no longer desire to be friends with, a new lover, a wonderful opportunity, the loss of a job, overwhelming financial burden, a person that seeks to control us-it is an opportunity to change directions on how we relate to our self. The primary relationship we have in life is to our self. When we completely fall in love with our self without judgments, vanquishing the burden of perceived guilt, then we begin to cherish ourselves. When we feel contained and safe within our bodies, rooted in the Source, this eternal Love, we know in our hearts that we are not separate from Mama Gaia.
A very simple and restorative practice that you can do that will allow you to begin to come into union with Mama Gaia and yourself, is to simply take off your shoes, and lie face down on the earth. Hug the earth. Release all of your concerns into Her warm embrace. Deeply inhale Her abundance; Her unconditional love. Feel your belly against Her warm roundness. Allow yourself to empty all thoughts and enjoy feeling your body with Hers. Envision an umbilical cord from your navel into the Her fiery core. Inhale and exhale from this core into your body. This fire is fueling the Source in your belly. Do this for as long as it feels beneficial. Slowly, gently conclude in a manner that gives thanks for the earth, for yourself and All that Is.
