Poetry Slam Review

WOMEN ON TOP

Text and photos by Marie Bee

TWO ladies have been striking the audience at the Writers Festival. One is Sage Kimball, 18 years old, and the other is Tara Khandro, a mature woman who could have been her mother. Both have the fire of poetry in their soul.

Miss Sage has been acting in The Conference of the Birds and you’ll read more about her in the article “Fly with these Birds”

As to Miss Tara, who started her career as aplaywright-director- actor, and who at times does write in the Ubud Community News - in spite of and maybe thanks to her graying hair, has just won the Third Prize at the Poetry SLAM contest! And this whole adventure happened in the most eccentric conditions. In fact, just less than two hours before the opening of the competition, Tara coaxed herself to writing a few verses. She felt inspired by the traditional and unavoidable questions always asked by every Balinese to every single foreign woman: “Are you alone? Where is your husband?”

Her presence on stage, — a seasoned comedian behind the poet —, microphone in hand, wrestling with these  vital and radical questions, playing along with humour, wit and a whiff of metaphysics, — made us all die with laughter. How well observed, these Balinese ways, and how spiritual her response:

“Are you alone?”

“No. I’m with Me, Myself, and I.

 “Are you alone?”

“No.

 I AM   ALL ONE”

The incorruptible judges scored her the highest marks and “Water and Stone”, the event’s sponsor, granted her with a travel ticket for two (haha…could the second seat be for her future husband??).

In any case, dear Tara, thank you for this unforgettable moment, it was worth tackling the question of the lonely hearts
